How to enjoy winter highlights of 17/18: Ski resorts and Pyeongchang 2018

Needless to say, ski resorts in Korea are major attractions for both foreigners and Koreans. In 16/17, five hundred thousand foreigners and around 5 million Koreans enjoyed ski/snowboard. The numbers are expected to rise in 17/18 due to Winter Olympics, Pyeongchang 2018.

*In this post, we will cover practical information about the ski resorts and Pyeongchang 2018 to help you better enjoy 17/18 winter holidays in Korea.

 

Ski Resorts in Korea

Korea has 19 ski resorts according to the ski resort business association of Korea.
Most of the ski resorts are located at Gangwon-do (highlighted in blue) as the region has the most annual snowfall, and the rest located at Gyeonggi (highlighted in purple) and southern parts of the country (highlighted in red).

In this season, three ski resorts will be occupied by the athletes participating Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics. Therefore, access to these resorts may be limited to the public.
The list of the ski resorts occupied during the winter Olympics and their restrictions to the public is as follows:

1. Yongpyong Resort
 Most of the slopes and services of Yongpyong resort will be open to the public except the following slopes:  
silver, silver paradise, rainbow 1 to 4, rainbow paradise 
2. Alpensia Resort
– The whole ski slope will be closed for this winter season, but the accommodations and other services will be available for different time period, please check their official website for the exact period.
3. Phoenix Park
– The ski slopes of the Phoenix Park will be only available until 21st of January and will be closed to the public after. Other services like water park and facilities will be available for the public.

As these three fine resorts will have limited access to the public, it is expected that other resorts will be more crowded than usual meaning early planning and decision-making is needed to enjoy the winter holidays in Korea.

Vivaldi Park, located at Hongcheon, Gangwon-do, is the most visited ski resort in Korea. In 2014, Vivaldi Park was ranked the 3rd place in customer satisfaction. Here are the merits of the resort and tips when visiting Vivaldi Park.

1. Free Vivaldi Park Shuttle bus for Foreigners
: Free shuttle buses with 35 to 40 routes to major metro or bus stations of Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi-do. Reservation at least 1-2 days in advance is required.

2. TOP 3 snow quality (Friendly for all level of skiers and snowboard riders)

3. Various entertainment facilities
: Ocean world, Sauna, Billiard room, bowling, table tennis, Singing room (Noraebang), Theatre, and medical center.

Tips
1. Avoid going on weekends
: Popularity means a lot of people and waiting in line for everything, try not to go on weekends, especially in 20th of December to 10th of February.

Elysian Gangchon is located at Chuncheon closer to Seoul than Vivaldi. It is the only resort accessible by public transportation. It is suitable for people who would like have a relaxing time with fewer people as the facilities are super clean and there are not many visitors compared to other major ski resorts such as Vivaldi or Konjiam.

Oak valley is a small and cozy ski park. As a result, it offers less crowd and friendly atmosphere for beginners. The resort is one of best parks for snowboarders as it offers space to try new moves!

1. Suitable for beginners and intermediates
: Not so many people providing less competition and more space on the slopes for beginners, snowboarding or skiing lessons are also available for sign up.

Tips
1. Not for advanced ski or snowboard riders 
: Angle of the beginner slope is too shallow; hard to create high speed

2. Avoid Going on weekends
: Since there are only 3 lifts, the line tends to get long on the weekends

3. Take tours
: Oak Valley is hard to access without a car for foreigners since they’d have to purchase bus or train tickets to Wonju and take the shuttle bus or taxi from there. Recommend taking the tour from Seoul.

Welli Hilli park is one of the best resort for ski & snowboard. They have 20 high-quality slopes designed by Paul Matthews, slope architecture from Canada’s ECOSIGN company, certified by Federation of International Ski Association (FIS). Welli Hilli has 6 slopes for beginners and 11 slopes for advanced level. Also, there are special terrains such as C-box, X-box, and wall box for snow boarders to practice their tricks. It is by far the best place to practice your ski&snowboard skills.

Located in Pocheon, Gyeonggi-do, Bears Town Resort is a great place for a one-day ski or snowboard trip since it’s only an hour away from Seoul. They are accessible by several buses as well! Slopes are also certified by the Federation of International Ski Associations (FIS) and is great for family and beginners. They also have 400m length sledding hill for kids!

Located in the southern part of Gyeonggi-do, Jisan Forest Resort is only 40 minutes from Gangnam to the south of Seoul. This resort is relatively small size, but is packed with convenient facilities at inexpensive prices. The lifts are fast-paced so that the waiting line isn’t long and they have heated seats for the riders comfort. The resort is a great value for the price without sacrificing the quality.

Located in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, Konjiam is the largest and most luxurious ski resort in the Seoul vicinity and limits its number of daily skiers (maximum: 7,000 skiers per day). It has a pleasant ski environment with quality slopes. Its condominium is well-known for its luxury and comfort. This resort is relatively expansive compared to other resorts, but definitely worth it!

It is specifically designed to disperse skiers and prevent overcrowding. Visitors can enjoy their winter leisure sports in this international-standard ski resort.

Pyeongchang 2018

This winter, ski resorts are not the only things to do in Korea. One of the biggest festivals in the world, Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic is taking place. It is greatly recommended that you take a visit, or at least feel the atmosphere by going to Gangwon-do during 9th of February to 25th to feel the true winter and passion of athletes, spectators, and local attractions with Olympic themes.

Ski resorts in Pyeonchang 2018

The three ski resorts that are used in the Olympics, Yongpyong, Phoenix, and Alpensi are traditionally (Alpensia is newly built for Pyeongchang 2018) the best ski resorts which have been loved by the Koreans for a long time.

 

Yongpyong Resort

Yongpyong is one of the first ski resort to operate in Korea since 1975 and is the best ski resort in scale, snow quality, and facilities. Every year, 140,000 foreigners visit Yongpyong for skiing and you can truly feel the winter as everything will be white.

 

Alpensia Resort

Alpensia Ski resort was originally built for the Pyeongchang 2018. It has facilities for ski jump, bobsleigh, and biathlons. It is a rather small resort with compact facilities. Recommended for family visitors as the accommodation (Holiday Inn & Hotel) and entertainments are well equipped.

Phoenix Park was chosen as the host of Winter Olympic Games due to its ski&snowboard trick terrains and gadgets such as halfpipe, moguls, and crosses.
